Mentorship Assignment

It is a professional expectation that you will be committed to mentorship in your nursing practice. This expectation is described in the CCPNR Standards of Practice (2013; 1.3, 4.9), Code of Ethics (2013; Principle 4), and the CLPNA Competency Profile (2020; C-9-2, C-10-4). Mentorship is linked to nursing leadership in the Competency Profile. This assignment is meant to explore the concept of mentorship in nursing in more depth and identify ways that mentorship should specifically influence your practice.

Two Parts:

Part One: Identify two academic sources (articles, or writings) that address the topic of mentorship in nursing. The source does not necessarily have to use the word, ‘mentorship’ but it should be about that concept. There are many articles about this topic. Choose two that interest you. The sources should be within the last 15 years. If you aren’t sure if your source is academic, please see the information in Canvas under Modules, “Buchanan Library,” ask myself, or a librarian. It is expected that you likely will review a number of articles and select two that you believe will be helpful to you in application. In this way you are reviewing the literature to some extent on the topic.

Summary

Briefly summarize the two articles in at least one full page, total. You should introduce the two articles specifically in this part, with the author’s name, the title of the article, and when it was written. The summary should include the main arguments or points. The summary is about overall ideas rather than small details. Please paraphrase instead of quoting.

Professional Application

Part Two: Describe at least two specific implications for your practice as you anticipate professional licensure, that derive from the two academic sources. Here you will think about how you might apply what you read to your nursing practice. For example, some implications may be linked to how you understand what your role is as a nurse, or your ethical commitment to colleagues, or prevent lateral violence, etc. This should be specifically applied to your nursing practice, not simply a rehearsal of what the author of the article said. You will likely not know what area of practice you will be in, but you will know that you work as a health care team member, and there are many consistencies across practice settings. For example, you will encounter students in various health programs, newer staff (shortly!), communication barriers, conflict, etc. The focus is on contributing to positive workplace environments and supporting your various colleagues. Use paraphrase (avoid quoting) with in-text citations to connect your ideas to the author of the two sources where necessary. This section should be at least one full page.

No introduction or conclusion necessary.

Formatting

  • Use APA style for the paper – 12 font, double space, etc. as well as for citing works in the paper.
  • Include a title page and a references page.
  • Content (not including the title page and the references page) should be 2 or 3 pages in length.
