Task 1

Learning is a critical aspect of an individual's life as it aids in the acquisition of intellectual capabilities that enables an individual to solve daily problems, develop a better understanding of their environment, and develop the social skills essential for daily survival among their peers. Humanities and social sciences represent critical disciplines through which a learning individual can develop the best understanding of their nature and environment. Humanities and social science are closely related because both focus on people and their cultures. Humanities is a discipline that aims to comprehend, appreciate, and study human behavior in all of its complexity and breadth (Otsuki 2018, P. 69). As a student, it is critical to note that humanities and social science borrow critical concepts from each other—for example, one of the key concepts in studying human nature. Through its disciplines such as history and psychology, social science focuses on learning the nature of humanity through looking through its past encounters, which then makes it easy for one to comprehend and predict the expected behaviors and the underlying factors that necessitate such behaviors. On the other hand, through disciplines such as linguistic and cultural studies, humanities focus on understanding human nature through understanding the origin and evolution of their dialect. Another critical concept shared between humanities and social sciences are social power and government. These are critical aspects in the lives of individuals, which explains why, through different disciplines such as political science, social science, and humanities through cultural studies and art, they have placed significant focus on them.

Task 2

The concept of human nature as studied through humanities and social sciences is similar in many ways. For example, both understand that past encounters highly influence human nature. Social science through psychology and history and humanities through cultural studies and linguistics both understand that the nature of an individual represents the total of their past experiences. Linguistics appreciates that an individual or communities’ dialect is influenced by their neighbors or the people they frequently relate with, which explains the similarities in language between closely interrelated communities. In contrast, psychology appreciates that a personal code of conduct is influenced by the people their interact with. The concept of power and social structure is essential in social science and humanities. Through the study of law and political science, social sciences explain the concept of power more objectively by looking into the importance of power and the social structures within the communities and the roles they play in shaping the world. Social sciences base their facts on empirical evidence and well-established theoretical concepts to present this concept. Whereas humanities also appreciate that power and social structures are essential in the lives of individuals, their mode of study is more subjective. For example, an individual might learn the importance of power and social structures through art and cultural studies; however, this will be a secondary aspect as the knowledge will be based on the general understanding and interpretation of art or cultural activities.

Task 3

As discussed above, learning is an essential concept that shapes an individual's life concerning their surroundings and improves their analytical abilities, essential for problem-solving. Another primary goal of learning and education is to enable a learner to develop the requisite skills and competencies that place them in a better position to get hired in a job market; this means that education can influence an individual's professional life. As a learner going through the module has enabled me to make a decision on the program quickly, I will undertake my degree in more ways than one. First, the module presents an in-depth overview of the relationships between the different disciplines encompassed in both humanities and social science, which has also led to a deep understanding of what is required in each particular subject, thereby making it easier for me to create a direct relationship between my character, abilities, weak points, likes and dislikes and easily discern what is essential for me based on merits as opposed to guesswork. Secondly, as a learner, I have always preferred evidence-based decision making and learning as opposed to theories; understanding the meaning of the main concepts between humanities and social science has helped inform my decision in this regard which also has helped me avoid the pitfalls that come with the lack of knowledge and information. Lastly, the module has helped me understand the relationship between each concept and how they complement each other, which helps me make a long-term career decision based on the resources I currently have, the market needs, and my long-term career needs.
